However, can anyone confirm how large the drum kit is please? Approx floorspace needed would be a great help.
Thanks!

In the UK, Rock band comes out on XBox in a week or so. Despite its insane pricing over here, I am still considering getting it.
However, can anyone confirm how large the drum kit is please? Approx floorspace needed would be a great help. Thanks! |

The drum kit is about 3 feet wide, maybe about 18 inches from front to back and about two feet high, once assembled.

I played the drums in the store and they have an annoying flaw: they are superloud when you hit them. Wouldn't be too bad if you are jamming really loud,
but most people I would assume turn the volume up to moderate levels and hitting drum tops would really overpower everything.
Dunno if another company has made a better version |

I've read that people have covered the drum pads with something to make them a bit quieter, without impacting the sensitivity enough to affect gameplay.
You could probably search Google to see what different people have come up with.

I got Rock Band for the PS3. Yes they are loud if you hammer on them, but you don't have to. They are quite sensitive. I covered mine in 1/8" gum
rubber pads ordered off eBay. If you surf the Rock Band forums you will catch links and reviews of other companies that sell them. The 1/8" gum rubber
made them about 50% as loud as they were, and the sound you do get is deeper. But again if you hammer on them they will be loud no matter what. I didn't
lose any sensitivity, in fact I think I drum better with them as the sticks rebound better now.
There are also felt and other materials out there that people use. You can always go to a craft store and just cut out 7" circles of different shit to try. Some people mod the sticks wrapping them with some material. Or picking up some rubber coated drum sticks. I'm now thinking of maybe replacing the pedal with a 3rd party one. I'm having some problems being consistent for the more difficult song on the hard setting. Picking up double beats when I shouldn't, seeming to fire way late after the stomp, etc. Just surf the forums a bit, there is a done of info out there for mods for any issue you might encounter.

Some info about the different pads.
Big discussion about gum rubber pads One of the better places to get rubber pads. Have fun
peace, Aielman Edit * note...just got 4 of the 1/8" thick gum rubber pads from the place I linked and put them on. They stick fine, and work well. Not quite as much sound dampening as I'd like (i would have gotten the 3/16" but the were out of stock and I needed them right away for my kid's birthday), but the bounce is hugely better. They're a helluva lot of fun. I haven't touched the skins in over a decade, but managed to get over 90% on hard on all of the practice songs the first try. Look into gum rubber drum pads, very quiet and increased rebound must have for any RB drummer.

You might want to wait a bit. I know here in the US Guitar Hero IV comes out in October and by the sounds and looks of it, it will blow Rockband away. It's
said to be priced at about $180 so its just a few more dollars than that of Rockband.

I have both now...and I prefer rockband for the equipment. I like the guitar better, and the interface better.
Have to give the nod to GH for the songs though. I think they have a better playlist...but that's just personal taste. In any case, the family is having a blast on our semi nightly jam sessions. peace, Aielman "There are no stupid questions...but there certainly are a LOT of inquisitive idiots" Husband, Father, Squisher of bugs.

Thats why GH IV will be better than Rockband Aiel. It's also going to have instruments, and the drum kit is a bit more compact and has a "cymbal and
hi-hat". Every song will be licensed AND you can make yer own songs, play via the internet, and upload your songs to a special website created by the GH
dudes themselves...so others can dl and play your songs.
Oh, you will also be able to "be in a band" via the Xbox and PS3 online gaming, so no need to have 4-5 people over when you create a "band" http://www.guitarhero.com/us/ There is a picture of what the drums will look like. I just hope they make the guitar a bit more "realistic" like the Strat in Rockband |

GH:WT will be interesting, but the only two things it will have over Rock Band is the ability to make your own music (not a factor for me), and some artists I
think are locked in with GH. Rock Band had on-line play from day 1. Otherwise it's shaping up to be Rock Band 1.5 (not 2.0 as it isn't adding anything
too new or special) Kinda iffy on the drum design too, with no bar to lock down that pedal in place, and the weak looking symbols, I think there is gonna be a
lot of bitching about them breaking.
I just wish both companies could work together and make the guitars/drums work for both systems. :( |

Rock Band had on-line play from day 1. Yeah, I know its had online play. The thing that should make GH better is the ability to create a band an play through the game using the "story" mode while online. The cool thing about the music making is you will be able to redo any song, save it, convert it and upload it...minus vocals (copyright infringement, bleh) and play other peoples versions. They are using the same format as Apples Garage Band software. Very easy tool to use for the home studio buff. Rumor has it that they acquired the rights to some "big" classic rock bands for some songs. And I agree Afmo, the guitars for GH are shit. Its cool though that they work for Rockband. Saves another $50 for the Strat. |

The thing that should make GH better is the ability to create a band an play through the game using the "story" mode while online. Which Rock Band has. I think the "make your own" music is gonna be complete shit. Most people that play these games are more autistic than artistic. I label my self this way as well. ;) It will be flooded with a bunch of 9 year olds flooding the system with dumb shit. I think the RockBand guitar looks the best, but the strum bar on it is complete shit. I know there is a strum bar mod out there to fix it though. I recently picked up a nasty looking guitar at Best Buy called Grinder from a company called Blockhead. It's got a nice paint finish, but the shape is a bit funky. It does play VERY well though. Clicky strum bar like the GH ones, but not quite as loud, and is very responsive. Works for GH or RB on PS2 or PS3, a switch on the RF receiver lets you pick which you are using. Is a bit pricy, but I figure with it working for both game sets I'll save my self the money buying the guitar for the GH series. |

Actually I replaced my strummer with one from bytearts.com and it works fantastic. In addition RB does NOT have online band for story mode so whats written
above is incorrect.
There is no motivation what so ever to play RB online from a scoring perspective solo or from a band perspective since you cannot progress thru band world tour. |

Hmmm I did notice there was a World Tour option under multi-player. Maybe it's none functional then. Personally I've only done the quick play for
on-line. And world Tour for local play. Don't see why they don't add that in if they can do quick play well enough as it seems they planned on it being
there with the menu option.

Gretchin wrote: I think the drums in RB are too compact as it is. The majority of the missed hits I have come from it being so small and me being used to a regular kit.
As to the rest...I'm sure the next RB, which is sure to come out a few months after GH IV, will have the features of GH. For me, GH having drums sort of goes against the premise of being a guitar hero, but in any case, having played both, I prefer the game play of RB. But...to each their own. I think they're both excellent products and I'm sure then next GH is going to be quite fun. I think the RockBand guitar looks the best, but the strum bar on it is complete shit.Heh...now see that's the part I like better on the RB guitar. It's tighter and I prefer that. peace, Aielman "There are no stupid questions...but there certainly are a LOT of inquisitive idiots" Husband, Father, Squisher of bugs.
