Posts: 1890 04-05-08 5:34 PM	Tags : None OK, guys, help me out if you have any ideas. Computer locks up. On reboot, doesn't recognize the keyboard. Boots to windows because BIOS is set to bypass errors. Mouse doesn't work either. Keyboard doesn't get power, mouse does. Both are USB. Switch both to different USB ports, no change. Switch both out with known working mouse and keyboard, no change. I'd bet on the ports being bad, except the mouse gets power. I'm guessing that something prevents recognition of the keyboard, and that error is blocking the I/O bus for the mouse. Any ideas (preferably short of replacing the motherboard)? That would be my first guess since known good replacements result in same symptom(s). Many times in battle, one might lose their mind, their life, their soul. What makes them a Marine is that they entered combat knowing the price they might pay, and chose to enter it anyway.

Posts: 1198 04-05-08 7:17 PM	Do you have an old PS/2 keyboard? I'd use that to get into the BIOS and see if there are settings for "legacy USB" or settings related to USB keyboards. How old is the motherboard? Zeist

Posts: 2121 04-06-08 4:11 PM Mortal Wombat Administrator	If you disconnect from power and remove the battery from the mainboard (and then replace it - don't touch the bottom of the battery btw) it will reset the BIOS in case something weird is set. There are a few things to be careful of, though, such as any custom settings regarding which drive to boot to etc. If the system is pretty vanilla (ie not running RAID and the like) you should be fine. The downside is that the system may fail to boot because it will stop on errors if that continues. Other thing to do is to disconnect everything that is not essential - any other USB devices, speakers, etc - anything that might draw power even secondary hard drives so you only have the boot drive running. And I presume from what you've said that the keyboard doesn't respond during the POST?
