once upon a time the butcher used to give these away or sell them as dog tucker. but these days since some food snobs took a tasty cheap meat and made it a fashion the price has gone through the roof and they now cost around $2.50 each.
the trick to cooking shanks is to do it really slow. so with that in mind they are perfect for the crockpot. they will need around 6 hours in the crockpot or about 3 hrs in the oven on a low heat of around 150c.you can subsitute worcestshire sauce with a tasty form of steak sauce.

so how to prepare them is really simple

take your shanks i usually cook 4 at a time or more if i can afford it
i then get a bottle of soy sauce, worcestershire, sweet chilli sauce and brown sugar
pour plenty of soy over the shanks followed by 1/4 that amount of worcestshire and then about the same of the sweet chilli and a handfull of brown sugar.
make sure the shanks are well coated and set to cooking on low, if you can turn them every couple of hours that is best as it get them all well coverd in the sauce. if you want to go for the really sticky version of these put them in the oven to finish.
