Last night GWB gave an articulate speech. He didn't trip over his words. He made no slips that will be punchlines on The Daily Show or Letterman.
Showing he has no desire to be a lame duck he outlined several new initiatives; the two that stick with me are the fuel reduction initiative and the health care tax cut. The fuel reduction thing may or may not just be window dressing. The health care tax cut sounded like a damn good idea to me.
Bush made a good sales pitch for his new Iraq policy. He admitted that previous approaches haven't worked as expected and asked for more time to let his new approach work. It was by far the best case I have heard from anyone for Bush's Iraq policy. And it was from the president's own lips - during an important speech - where and when the nation should hear the case made.
Bush was brave enough to stand by his convictions. On a wide range of subjects Bush stuck by his positions; immigration, Iraq, etc. He showed character and a willingness to step across party lines to find support for his position rather than changing his position to match his party's position.
Why am I pissed?
Where has the guy who gave the speech last night been for the last 6 years? Why two years ago when Iraq was just starting to go sideways did he not approach selling his policies to America and the world with the same vigor and insight? For a long stretch he simply refused to even try to sell his Iraq policy or explain it. Why did we have to wait 6 years to get movement on health insurance? Why have we had to endure the mumbling stumbling version of Bush who refuses to admit to a single mistake, refuses to entertain the possibility his choices have been anything less than divine prior to Nancy Pelosi picking up the House gavel? Why did it take a sound ass beating at the polls to bring out the best in Bush?
I want to know where the guy who gave the speech last night has been hiding for the past six years. America could have used him.
