If there's a mass-market beer that just happens to get it 'right', I'd say that's worth mentioning too. Pleasant surprise that I just finished enjoying: 90 Minute IPA by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Rated 91 over at BeerAdvocate.com. If you enjoy a well-hopped India Pale Ale, this is your poison. Has all the floral goodness, with the right amount of bitter without bite I've run into with other micro-brews. Add to which it doesn't have that "green"-ness (to borrow a Wine Lover's term) of raw alcohol either. Smooth, with a sweet finish from refrigerated cold start to room temp finish. Posts: 2558 11-27-06 11:00 AM Mera's Master	The rare, but amazing 120 minute IPA by the same brewery is simply amazing. High IBUs, but still not overly hoppy with good balance. The 90 minute is nice as well, though, and much more readily available! =) I've been enjoying Pyramid's Snowcap Ale lately! Local brew ftw!

Posts: 1333 01-01-07 11:31 AM	bubbly surprise was found in Lindemans Pomme (Apple Lambic Beer). If you're into Lambics, or even Hard Cider, you'll really enjoy this one. Definate apple aroma, with very fine champagne-like carbonation of an almost velvety pursuasion. Tart like all get out - reminded me of tart apple hard candy, on steroids. It's slightly cloudy since it's double fermented. Let the bottle stand chilled at least overnight after moving it about to let the second dose of yeast to settle out. Was surprised to see bottle was not only corked, but also capped in the conventional beer bottle manner (foil covered for your pleasure as well). Worth drinking once in a night - wouldn't make it a night long beverage of choice due to the tartness. I was introduced to Delirium Tremens (see next post) at a local bar who has seen fit to stock Belgian Beers on tap and had to snag one of these: Delirium Nol. It's a strong Dark Belgian Ale. Be warned, make sure you're not the designated driver before consuming - it's addictive for those who enjoy a complex dark ale with an ABV of 10%. Sliight hop-i-ness hides underneath a red colored ale with cherry/brown sugar sweetness and a champagne finish - might even had a tad bit of clove to boot. Smooth drinker - carbonation was lower than the Lamic above, nice finish. Taste matured as it warmed from refridgerator cold to room temp. Worth cellaring to fend off the winter chill. Posts: 1333 01-01-07 11:46 AM	Since I mentioned it above, Delirium Tremens is a must-add to one's Pale Ale list - it's another Strong Belgian Ale, yet is Pale. A little yeasty, just this side of sugar-sweet with slight citrus tones - mouth feel like a Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Hoppy to please the IPA crowd, taste unfolds as it warms to room temp. Fantastic in its White "ceramic'd" bottle festooned with Pink Elephants - best on tap if you can find it. Posts: 1333 01-01-07 11:51 AM	Here's a beer that managed not only managed to disappoint, but piss me off: Alpha King Pale Ale - an American Pale Ale, as opposed to an American IPA (India Pale Ale). One word - over hopped with flat, unimaginative hops. The hops were missing that essential, in my opinion, floral aroma and taste. They must have picked up someone else's hop leftovers. It disappointed me from the start, and pissed me off by the time I got to the foot of the bottle as when it warmed it tasted even worse to the point of becoming oily-bitter. Yuck. Beeradvocate gives it a composite 91 out of 100. I think those guys are on crack - it sucks. /edit - Sierra Nevada (should be available with the mass-market beers in most markets) did a hell of a better job with the APA recipe that these guys did. Posts: 1333 01-01-07 12:05 PM	A local (for me, I'm in Chi-town) brewery, that I used to visit regularly while in College in Milwaukee, Sprecher Brewing Company puts out a decent Abbey Triple Bock. It's not the best of "Tripel"s, since it's missing some of that characterstic taste depth - not watered down, but missing out on some more of the complex tastes you'd want in a triple malted beer. Slight sugar with a little tartness, malty goodness that blossoms aroma-wise as it warms up to room temp - nice hop-i-ness. Not likely to be a choice-of-poison for the entire night, but worth snagging on-tap if you're in the Milwaukee area. Posts: 2639 06-08-07 11:53 AM	At you recommendations I went out and got some Dogfish head 90 minute IPA and Midus Touch. Absolutely loved both beers. The brewery is close to me and they apparently plan on opening 6 Pub Houses in the MD/DC area. I've got 2 cases of the 120 Minute IPA on order. I plan on drinking one and storing the other. $175/case! ouch!

I'm searching for a local store for Masala Mama India Pale Ale - I've heard tell some of the larger specialty outlets around here will order a case or two on recommendation, so when I snag that I'll drop a note or two about it. Also heard about a recommendation on snagging the 8-pack sampler of Unibroue - I was told I won't be disappointed. I'm looking forward to snagging that too. Posts: 1333 10-25-07 5:42 PM	Creamy smooth Black Beer that I found satisfied: Köstritzer Schwarzbier. Nice roasty-malty taste, with a creamy texture (mouth-feel to use the beer-enthusiast slang). Nice thing about it, it has all the nice things that a realy fine chocolate has without noticeable sweetness. The upshot of this is, it's perfect for dishes that have a sweet component to it (sweet sauces, fruit sides, etc). In fact, I liked the nutty aroma with the malty hint - fairly clever in my opinion. Drinkable all night/day long. Late arriving recommendation for Lindemans Pomme (Apple Lambic Beer) , purchase in the large "format" bottles (not the single servings) - much better taste to the point it could become an all-night/day drinker. Besides, it makes dealing with the inevitable sediment easier. Last additional note: Delirium Tremens and Delirium Noel now come in single serving bottles - taste just as good as they do in the large "shareable" bottles. Posts: 1333 10-26-07 8:21 AM	Allagash Tripel Reserve. That's all the introduction this Belgian beer needs. If you've snagged one, make sure to take the time to serve this at cellar temperature (50 - 60°F) since serving it refrigerator cold is a crime (as I quickly found out - you miss out on all the different flavors). They weren't kidding on their label when they mentioned the essences of fruit and hint of sweetness that the good Trippels have. More of a mix of flavors than I've run into with other Trippels - worth purchasing in the large "sharable" format bottle since you'll want to take your time with it. Not necessarily an all-night drinker, more of an aperitif or after dinner drink with a good, strong flavored cheese. It would pair well with a meal, but should be considered a course all in itself (yeah, its that good and worth some attention) - it's a sipper not a gulper. I have not brewed in ages but that is my best guess. Hordain: I love my Belgian ales, as apparently you do. I am sitting on a '93 magnum of Chimay Reserve. I should be getting around to drinking it soon eh? The Chimay is corked but after 15 years, I could be pushing it. On that note I just had a single bottle of the I believe '97 Bigfoot and boy was that delicious. It had totally mellowed out and there was no overpowering aromas. The carbonation was just right too.
