This is probably no suprise but i disagree with just letting them go on thier own freshmen year,without being able to see whats going on, I dont care what the school says, Unless your "young adult" is paying his own way, I would suggest getting used to the word FERPA and make sure its signed, This will allow you to get any information from the school about your child, If its not signed you will be denied any information.
I agree, parenting doesn't end at 20, however it is supposed to change form and function over time, especially as the Kids make their way into college. I'm with Feyd - it sounds preachy, but it's true: getting across the point of Responsibility with increased Freedoms is what needs to be expressed. The payoff, once the message takes, is truly gratifying.
The Learning to Trust but Verify thing is fairly tricky and treacherous - it's a difficult line to tread I've found.
