Police are just not trained to handle blind fat women you can't expect them to stand by while a blind fat woman talks on a phone she could of been talking to osama bin laden!

I'm sure the BLIND WOMAN hit the cop... you know... because the blind just have such good aim... I'm sure this is a case of justified proper use of a taser.

Yall thought I was bat-shit crazy about six months ago when I started the thread about tasers being banned, but it's not going to take too many more of these types of incidents before someone calls for one. There have been a lot more since we quit posting in that thread, I just didn't feel like adding them all as they happened.

What's really important, not that the public cares, is knowing how often tasers are misused. Yes, some of the misuses have been shocking and make great headlines but are we talking about 20% of all taser usage or 0.01% of all taser usage?

there is a pattern forming that instead of relying on training, police are tasering first, asking questions later because they see the taser as a magic solve all device. which is why you have cops tasering pregnant women, blind women, 12 year olds etc etc, but i wont rehash the last thread...

No, but a single misuse of a night stick is not a case for banning the use of night sticks. My response was to Cin's talk of tasers being banned. I'm sure you can make an emotional case to ban tasers based on a few bad incidents. However, if you're going to make a solid case for banning tasers you're going to need more than anecdotal evidence and emotion.

Really? Or is the pattern that the media jumps onto cases of taser misuse and the spotlight in taser misuse makes it appear that tasers are misused more often than they actually are?

So far, I haven't seen any data showing how often tasers are misused. If you have the data to support your claim that "a pattern is forming" I'd like to see your data.

Can we agree they are being misused MORE then other methods since I've seen less "cops beat the shit out of my 12 year old, blind woman, pregnant woman" stories then taser stories?

I'm all for tasers if they have STRICT guidelines on use and are used "before" a gun not as a first or second response item.

OF COURSE because I mean the cops would of had to put 2 between the eyes of the blind woman or the 5 year old THERE IS NO OTHER WAY! They couldn't restrain them without serious physical harm there is just no way to cuff someone whos blind or 5 years old with mortal dnager to the officer.

And if your on your knees, cuffed and surrounded by 8 cops at a political rally? Your 20X more dangerous.

Clearly it was kill or be killed here but thankfully the taser spared a life.

If one actually needs to restrain a combative old obese woman, it might be wiser to use the temporary stunning effect of a taser rather than actually manhandling her. She might not be able to do any real damage to the cop, but remember that such restraint is also to prevent her from damaging herself.

Now, whether there was any actual need to restrain her, none of us can say with the information provided. What the cops did may have been excessive--but it may not. There is no "default" condition for excessive force in any given situation. The media's tendency to play on the blind/old/young thing as a means of evoking sympathy is little more than yellow journalism.

OF COURSE the bullshit answer... "danger in harming her" isn't that why these people are TRAINED to be cops?

I mean... you can be a professional wrestler (not WWF, Olympic) or US Army Ranger and subdue someone without injury yet when it comes to the police and the last 10 years it no longer possible without the threat of serious injury that we must resort to tasers which... CAN KILL SOMEONE... AND HAVE... because said "guy on drugs" "drunk woman" etc etc etc "kid with heart condition" the cop DOESN'T KNOW about before he fires his taser at someone who could of been easily restrained or WAS RESTRAINED otherwise.

Tasers are bullshit ways of police punishing people who don't obey when they are NO RISK to themselves or others and to make it so they can shoot first and maybe give a shit whats going on later.

"Can" subdue without injury...maybe. How many combative old obese blind women do Olympic wrestlers or Army Rangers need to subdue without injury as part of their duties? There are plenty of very mild submission moves that could easily cause permanent damage to an old woman. Police are tasked to avoid that happening, and the taser is one of the safer tools in their arsenal in that regard. Using the taser is part of what cops are TRAINED to do.

If it's to avoid injury the many injured or dead people from tasers would disagree that a sprained wrist was more dangerous.

If it's to protect cops then I can't wait till they taser an 11 month old baby who wouldn't obey a lawful command from a cop to stop crawling towards him! COULD HAVE A GUN!!! OR A TERRORIST!!! YOU JUST DON'T KNOW!!!

#1: Cops used to understand RISK was part of the job. You PROTECT OTHERS not yourself. Your not a cop so your 100% safe no matter who in the public has to suffer. Cops today who are too afraid to do their job without tasering someone blind or 5 years old or surrounded by 6 other officers handcuffed and kneeling I hope run into a family member who decides that witnessing this that he's not a god and can decide whenever he feels his safety matters more. Trust me if it was my kid you'd have a dead cop. I'm sure you'd let the cop taser your kid because... well... HE'S A COP.

#2: Go tell that to the many injured or dead after taser use that it's SAFER. You know... outside of the taser companies studies done on healthy stress free people in controlled circumstances which we know is EXACTLY what would be when the taser would be used...

OF COURSE because you can't possibly assume that hundreds... thousands... tens of thousands of years with cops not assulting blind people kids and pregnant women means that it's somehow LESS safe to taser them that's idotic.

I'm sure a 20 year survey with detailed statistics would be needed to determine how handcuffs, the silent killers, really are equally if not more dangerous.

Having a father who retired as a cop who didn't have access to tasers while active I'll say I could honestly give a damn about how you feel on the situation. The difference in safety for cops now compared to then is night and day and for you to try and think you have the right to say that the cop shouldn't be worried about his own safety at all is bordering on retardation. The number of things that my father has told me, and I've been told by other cops he worked with, since he has retired would have scared the hell out of me if I knew it when he was active.

Yes tasers are a scary notion and I think things need to be looked at very hard. Here in Louisville we have had two deaths in the past couple of years with one just about two weels back. That doesn't stop them from being a very much needed restraint for law enforcement. It simply means at times they are being misused and when they are the cops need to be dealt with. That though is the same thing that can be said for anything a cop can use to defend himself with.

For you to honestly think though that you have the right to decide that somebody like my father is less valuable than some guy who was so drugged out of his mind and suffering from mental instabilites... I'll leave it at that as you aren't worth getting banned for.

Chabisu: Yes his life is. That's part of BEING a cop. You have to put OTHERS first. Sorry that offends you but thats part of the job. Cop's used to know that and live that. Protect and serve meant protect the public not protect themselves and server their own interests. Which means as we went over in the LAST thread tasers are a response BEFORE guns not a FIRST RESPONSE and only used when a gun is the next step NOT when you don't approve of what the person is saying so you taser them so they shutup or stop kicking your cruisers bullet proof plexi or because a blind woman is in your way...

Protecting a subject from harming themselves IS BULLSHIT. These situations keep coming up when people are being tasered and the excuse is always "in the person's best interest" yea.. your 12 year old wow she'd of hurt herself if we cuffed her so it was much better to taser her... your pregnant wife she would of hurt herself if we had to cuff her so we tasered her... your blind old mother we had to taser or she would of hurt herself...? You believe any of that? The COP getting hurt? PART OF THE JOB. A soldier isn't allowed to taser someone because they might be dangerous or might hurt themselves if they had to be restrained yet we allow our cops to taser kids and blind people and defend them as if the situation could mean it was really valid...

Come on? You can't possibly believe this shit? If it's true then wrestling programs all over colleges and high schools must be destroying peoples lives left and right all the time and by the grace of god I survived the horror of activly resisting someone stronger then me without this "danger" they would be put under if the cops had to do the same thing.... like they have... for thousands of years... without tasers...

What exactly is so hard about requiring cops to use a taser as they would of used a hard strike with a nightstick? The ONLY argument I've ever heard thats even a possibility is "the cop's safety" and I don't value a cop's safety over a kid's safety or blind person's safety or a pregant woman's safety. I approve of PAYING cops because their job is to put themselves in harm's way so the citizens don't have to. As part of that we expect them to use violence as a last resort not as an easy way to be safe.

A taser isn't a verbal command. A taser isn't handcuffs. A taser isn't physically holding someone down.

It's really that simple.

You activly fighting a cop and he tries to restrain you and can't go for it. You have any kind of weapon go for it. Your a SERIOUS risk of harming yourself or others (ie: holding someone, going to grab someone threatiningly who's a bystander not a cop, etc) then go for it.

Your a blind woman? No.
Your a 5 year old? No.
Your a pregnant woman? No.
Your a guy who throws the ticket at you? No.
Your someone who refuses to follow an "order" but has made no threatening or possibly threatning moves? No.

It's really that simple. I'd bet 90% of cops already follow those rules but it's the 10% we need the absolute regulations for.

I'd bet that 90% of statistics are made up on the spot 80% of the time with no data to back them up.

Don't worry though...we've taken your anti-taser crusade seriously where I live.

Instead, we just shoot people giving the cops difficulty. 13, as of this morning, times so far this year, 9 of which were fatally... and it's only July. We had more shootings last year than Orlando, Miami and Tampa combined. But hey...at least they didn't get tased.
