I'm having a problem with the order in which my PC boots up. Somehow the order got changed from Hard Disk, CD, Floppy, Removable, to Removable, Hard Disk, CD, Floppy.

Problem is, every time i F10 into the boot menu and change the order back to Hard Disk first, it works for the one boot up, adn then reverts back to removable first. Its pretty annoying since i have to remove my wireless mouse reciever every time i reboot my PC.

Any ideas?

At a guess, your CMOS battery is dying?

That is the correct behavior for 99.9% of motherboards. Hitting F10 (or whatever the key is to select boot order -- not all motherboards even have that option) is intentionally a one-time deal. In fact, most will say "one-time boot" or something along those lines where it says what key to hit.

In order to change it permanently, you need to hit whatever key it is that puts you into the BIOS settings (usually delete or F2) and find where that setting is and change it.

computer is about a year and half old, so i don't think the battery is dying.

I went into the BIOS and checked the boot order and it was indeed "Removable" first, before "Hard Disk." I changed the order, hit f10 to "Save and Exit" i plugged the mouse reciever back in, and same problem. any other ideas?

The battery could be dead after that short period of time, it depends on how you use the computer. The battery really doesn't hold a great deal of charge, the only time it is used is when the computer is off and fully disconnected from power.

I have a motherboard that is only a couple of years old with a dead battery. The reason why it's dead is because in the past I would use the system and at times unplug it for long periods. So the battery has been cycled to fully dead too many times and now it won't hold a charge. But the only time the problem rears its head is when the power has gone out or I unplug the thing.

This probably isn't your problem anyway. It would be plain to see if the battery was dead. It would give you the CMOS checksum message when you turned it on rather than changing one setting.

Anyway, if it's your USB mouse receiver that is causing the problem then it probably is still a setting in the BIOS.

But it's probably not boot order, it might be some DOS USB compatability option. It probably isn't actually attempting to boot off of any removable device first, but it's going into some quasi-USB boot mode that allows USB storage devices to be available as a floppy or as a hard disk without needing a driver under DOS. You could check this if your computer has a floppy drive by putting in a floppy and trying to let the computer boot off of it without intervention. I don't think it will.

no floppy drive on this machine...been googling the problem to no avail...no idea where to go at this point. Its not really affecting the functionality of anything, its just mildly annoying tbh...

Are you overclocking your PC or something? Some motherboards have a feature that detects an unstable POST (power on self test) routine which then causes all settings to revert to a default. The last motherboard I had which had such a feature was called "Watching Dog Timer." LOL, I love Taiwanese English. :)

nope, no overclocking.

realizing that this all started about the same time i replaced my keyboard and mouse, so i uninstalled the programs associated with them, and still having the same problem

Even if there isn't any overclocking happening, is there in fact an option in BIOS that causes the system to reset CMOS to some default state in the event of a failed POST routine? That sure sounds like what you're describing. As far as I know, there isn't any way for a generic software program running at the DOS / Windows level to reconfigure any option in CMOS unless it's very specifically designed to do that. In those cases where it can write new CMOS values, the software typically requires user feedback as to the type of CMOS device on the motherboard. In short, I'm really skeptical that your keyboard and mouse software could be culprits.

One weird thing that happened to a PC of mine was that it would refuse to boot properly with a USB-based memory stick reader attached, despite setting up BIOS to handle boot order with hard disk first. Any chance you've attached something / anything via USB that either contains data or can read in data potentially related to booting a PC? Other than this, I'll confess to being stymied.

gotta thank gandol for fixing my problem...

for whatever reason it didn't even register to me that i had my 500gb External HD plugged into the back of the machine. unplugged it, reboot, no errors, even with USB reciever in. No idea why the conflict was resolved every time i unplugged the mouse reciever, but hey...whatever works LOL
