No, but I do want a leader that is a respresentative of the American public. The debate on immigration is much more than just wandering poll numbers. At the core is a debate over which path would lead to a more secure country (politically and economically). In 1986, the government past an amnesty bill based on a major compromise - amnesty would go hand-in-hand with increased enforcement so that we would not need another amnesty. Obviously that failed. The public knows this and does not want to get robbed again. The compromise that we can provide an amnesty and then enforce security is a lie - it's a false path meant to get what some politicians want without delivering on the promise. We went through this twenty years ago, and now the American public has said that this is not the path we want.

The stupid thing about this campaign is that it's just political attacks without thought of the American people. McCain took notice of what Americans have been saying over the past two years, and Obama attacks him on it. Fish dismisses the whole debate as just "wind of poll numbers". No one wants to admit the obvious - a government of, for and by the people needs to listen to the people on major domestic policy.

Yes, but McCain has recently said that his stance, as modified by public opinion, is that his idea of amnesty would occur after we can demonstrate that the borders are more secure. It's a more rational approach and has a lot more sincerity that Obama's stance.

I don't see an "after" here. I think McCain is going to throw the secure-the-borders-first people overboard.

Yup, there is a major risk and we, the American people, must watch him to make sure he sticks to his promises. I would rather not have a candidate who says things like that but it's much better that Obama's stance.
