In mid-1968, McCain's father was named commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater, and McCain was offered early release. The North Vietnamese wanted a worldwide propaganda coup by appearing merciful, and also wanted to show other POWs that elites like McCain were willing to be treated preferentially. All I remember about McCain from the 2000 campaign was that his service to the country is questionable (he didn't do enough to help his fellow captives

It was shit like this that made me wonder why in fuck's sake did the republicans pick Bush over McCain in 2000.
I mean you have an honest to goodness war hero with tons of experience in the Senate, but yet they pick a one term governor running on daddy's name. It absolutely drove me nuts.
