Also of interest is a new generation of motors going into cars, including GM of all companies. They have a spiffy little 4-banger with a turbo that with a 2.0L displacement, achieves something like 260HP. This unit is apparently in heavy use in the European offerings. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come for the "muscle" car market in the US.

In another post, I had made mention of the VW diesel engine which is supposed to hit something like 100 mpg (what's that in liters and km?) and somebody else here indicated that the motor is too dirty to pass American smog specifications. I ran across an article the other day which suggested that there is indeed gear that can be strapped to the motor to clean up emissions and that VW hasn't had a reason to bring it to America because it's selling as many as it can make into other markets without any modifications required.

At some point, and I think it won't be long, power-plant solutions like those seen from GM and VW are going to be coming to America, and the market for slick new engines is going to competitively heat up sooner rather than later.

Yeah, I misspoke. The 100 mpg unit was a diesel-hybrid unit. Probably gutless, but adequate!
