When I was young in the olden times, Cook Brothers was the bike every kid wanted to have -- late 70s to early 80s. Better than Mongoose, Redline, Hutch, Panda, etc...

Apparently Cook Brothers doesn't make BMX anymore, so I'm looking to buy a bike for my son's birthday and I want it to be the cool brand all the kids want. I'd like to keep it in the 3 figure range somewhere, but I could spend a little more if needed.

My nephew raced BMX for a few years in his early teens and the hot bikes were still hanging around from when I was a kid. He rode a Redline, but lots of kids were riding Redline, Mongoose and GT.

I guess it depends on what he is going to be doing. Riding around the neighborhood or are you looking for a bike for certain aspects like vert, freestyle or ramp type use?

I raced between the ages of 10-12 and rode GT the entire time. They still make bikes and seem to be in the elite at this point. I don't know how popular they are, but seem to make quality bikes still.

I remember when Redline came out with the "industrucable" front forks. Our local store had a policy that they would give you two forks if you were able to bend the pair you bought. After giving us around fourteen pairs, they changed their minds. Doing elevator drops from the second story of a two story home was very bad for Redline, but good for us :)

Now that you've got me thinking about stupid stuff I did in my teens, it is no wonder I don't have a problem doing airborn jumps in the military. At least in the military, you've got a reserve 'chute. Didn't have that option with a lot of the crazier shit we did back in our youths and it's a wonder some of us servived.

My son is 4, but unusually athletic/big for his age.

I'm looking for 16"/20" bike that he will ride in front of the house and to the park. A $79 bike from Target would do fine, but I want it to get the "wow you have a..." from his cousins/friends/etc. In other words, I want him to look cool to the extent a 4 year old can look cool. He likes the BMX look/style of bike generally.

I went to highschool with the Hutchins kids. One drove a 911 to school the other a Ferrari. I think they both quit highschool. The last time I saw one of them (it was a long time ago) he was driving an old jeep.

When I was tried doing BMX when I was younger I went out and saved all my money for a GT Pro Preformer and loved the crap out of it. I grew out of my BMX phase when I took a jump way to fast and slide about 20 feet on my face int he gravel, or maybe it was the time I thought having someone ride on the back pegs down an almost vertical hill was a good idea and slide most of the way down the hill on my face on the pavement. Stupid bikes.

What about Haro?

I went and saw Hoffman today. It's going to cost me a lot to get a Scarab 16" customized. The Hoffman doesn't come in red, but I could order the frame in the red they use for another model -- $250. It doesn't come with a coaster brake and they don't make a rear with a coaster hub to match the front -- so that means two new wheels. It also is hard to fit training wheels to a hoffman because of the size of the axel (?) on the back, so i'd need to get a set fabricated. There's something else i am forgetting atm, but it was gonna cost too. I'd basically be paying more than the bike costs for customizations.

Hey, what was the bike that first came out with the disc covers over the wheels? I remember that being cool for all of about 10 seconds and then being really lame.

That was the Huffy Sigma. I had one stolen from me. I lived in the ghetto though.

I came to my senses and decided to go with this. Less than $200 for a first bike he'll love just because it's red. I'll save a really nice bike for when he gets older and tie it to some sort responsibility/chores/whatever.
