Obama stated that he had visited 57 states, hasn't been to 1 yet and won't visit two. I said that he was only off by ten. Any fourth grader would have known that off by ten is 47, not 67, since there are 50 states in total. Are you still with me? If not, grab a crayon and a sheet of construction paper and try to follow along. 57 off by 10 is 47. He hasn't visited one yet which brings the total to 48. He said he won't visit two which brings the total to 50. See? 50 states. Again, where was my complaint? You can get back to me after recess if you are having a difficult time with this. |

You need to decide whether you want to willfully hold Obama to the "number you claim he stated" or are you willing to admit that he may have meant a
different meaning of "state" or perhaps had an honest slip of the tongue, one not worthy of this kind of partisan, semantic consternation. Regardless

I don't hold the mistake against Obama; the man has been on the campaign trail for a long time now, and is quite likely worn our mentally and physically. I
also wouldn't hold it against Clinton or McCain if they said the same thing.
And it wasn't a "number you claim he stated." He stated it himself in the video Klark was so kind to provide for us. How many states are there? |

So, the upshot is that Obama blundered and said 57 instead of 47? While it's mildly amusing, I'm not generally one to knock someone for simple slips
of the tongue.
Regardless though, above a 3nd grade level of distinction, there are not 50 states.Apparently my schooling was a good deal lower quality than I believed...if there are not 50 states, how many are there?

There are some important technical differences between states and US territories. There are indeed 50 states.
Territories don't have congressmen or senators to influence the direction of federal action. There are probably other differences too, but I don't know them off hand.

From the beginning Klark/Snallie's arguments seemed to be poorly
defined, sematic and predicated on some nebulous, yet in their minds very specific definition of "state".
In the real, post-4th grade world, there are 46 states and 4 Commonwealths + an amazing number of independent "states" < see that word, E.g. Guam, Puerto Rico, Marshall Islands etc.
Additionally there are ~ 190 "states" recognized by the U.N. Of
which Texas is not one. "State" gets a lot of milage.
