Interesting article on Cnet about WAPO editor Jim Brady. He'd like a system created that
would require commentors to give their identity.

The biggest online forum in norway (the forum of the biggest newspaper) http://vg.transact.no/Group.asp which
have since 1999 I think some tens of millions of posts require identification through your cell phone to post.
Basically: You make an account, and for it to be activated you have to pay $1 through an SMS service. And if you get banned, they ban that cell phone numer. Works decently, but of course there's some people that come back again over and over, but they get kicked out again pretty fast. |

Lots of people have gotten very comfortable with the anonymous nature of the internet (right now). Its going to take a lot of kicking and screaming to get
things to change in that respect.

Point is, you can be anonymous, while still requiring identification and having the ability to ban people. It's not an either / or issue, unless people
want everything you write on the net to be signed with your real name. Which isn't what he's saying in the original article.

Yeah...but that's the exception, not the rule. Most people are going to be identified...and most people won't get around the restrictions...which I
would think is what they want to accomplish.
