The jist of it is they performed an experiment for a missing child who people saw posters of then saw in the mall and a majority of people didn't help because of paranoia and mass hysteria of pedophiles causing most men to think if they help the'll be accused and be instantly guilty of pedophilia.

The saddest shit?

The experiment and the reactions of shoppers was upsetting and satisfying to the child's real father who watched the experiment from a distance."On one hand, I wish someone could have stopped to check on a little girl who was obviously by herself," father Brian Ball said. "But on the other hand, it was nice to see there weren't a lot of men walking up to her and random strangers."

... so your daughter is missing, possibly taken by a pedophile and your GLAD random men aren't going to help her because ...everyones a child molester!!!!!

its a sad and telling experiment about our society. unfortunately i've gotta agree though...there's too much bullshit that goes along with trying to help anyone now a days, not just children. With all the lawsuits and shit, why should i bother to risk myself to help anyone? No thank you...Somebody elses problem...

Very simple answer: "Because I hope others would bother to risk themselves to help me".

Maybe it's worse over there than it appears (and I was in the US late last year), but even in the Litigious States of America, I wouldn't hesitate to stop to check on a child who appeared to be alone or lost (even if I simply looked for a security officer or a shopkeeper or similar to raise my concerns). What I wouldn't do, is touch the child or try to take them anywhere (unless they needed immediate first aid or had to be removed from clear danger). It's easy to ask for someone else passing by to go and get security or just use a cell phone to call appropriate people to help. I really don't see any risk.

Having said that, even here I've seen all too often people just walk past and won't stop to help. That's not me, that's not how I ever want to be.

yep...and i have no qualms about it either. I take care of myself and those that I surround myself with. I wouldn't expect anyone to take care of me either. worry about your own situation. an easy fix is to keep an eye on your kid...a radical idea, i know, but its worked in the past and it'll work in the future...

I'd stop to help the kid, I don't generally worry about getting sued, or being falsely accused of something when I didn't do anything wrong. If it happens, it happens. Of course, I'm the dumbass that'd run in to help someone getting mugged by multiple people (not that I'm a badass or anything, but I can generally handle myself okay in those situations, and damn if I wouldn't be hoping surprise wouldn't help me out some), that's my normal reflex, even if I think I'll get fucked up in the process. But, what'cha gonna do. I'd rather run in to help and run the risk of something happening to me than ignore the situation and feel like a douchebag later for doing so.

It'd be the same thing with a kid in that situation. I'd run the risk of helping her and having someone jump up my ass and accuse me of something I didn't do as opposed to maybe seeing her picture on the news later with "deceased" under her name.

Oh and quite modest

I have helped lost kids, and will continue to do so. One advantage I have is that I can always show the parent my work ID and they tend to relax, knowing that a school personnel intervened rather than some "stranger." On the other hand, I can certainly see where a guy would automatically place himself into a stigma situation, even if he has his own kids with him.

A lost kid is a scared kid, and they forget the rules that their parents have told them about not talking to strangers because they are frightened and don't know what to do-- they fall back on "adults can help me." Hence, I would rather be the person helping knowing that I am safe than risk the child being exposed to someone who is not. That thought scares me more.

I wonder if you'll think the same if you're slumped forward against the steering wheel, bleeding from a large head wound, as a passerby mentions "you better dial 911, dude, you don't look good" and then walks off.

Or you're walking with two of your own young children and one suddenly runs off and you have to pay attention and catch them and then you turn around and the other one is suddenly not there in the crowd, and you start calling out and you ask the people around if they've seen your child and someone answers, "yeah" and then just walks off.

There have been experiments done that show that people in social situations (i.e., a lot of other people around) are less likely to initiate action than when they are alone. My memory is that one experiment had actors and a test subject sitting in a waiting room; they heard screams, but if the "actors" didn't respond the test subject tended not to respond either. I suppose it's a "go along with the crowd" response.

That being said, an eight-year-old child sitting in a shopping mall, who doesn't seem distressed, isn't someone I would look at twice. If I had seen her photo on a missing child poster or she seemed to be in trouble; that would be another matter.

you make a fair point. i guess i was being a bit hasty with my sweeping generalization. I do realize that there are situations that call for intervention. I do however, still keep out of other peoples problems as much as possible.

I help kids all the time as the situation arises. Kid seems way too young and alone, I ask where mommy or daddy is. Kid in the neighborhood has a flat tire, I offer up help with the fix. It's the humanist in me that recognizes we're all in it together, and good deeds are both rewarding and ultimately, likely to propagate when examples are set.

Kids are creepy and are generally petri dishes of disease and filth. Unless the child was screaming for help, I probably wouldn't have noticed that he was sitting alone, let alone being a weirdo white knight by trying to find his parents.

I'm with the minority that say unless the kid was actually looking upset I probably wouldn't stop. Far too often I see kids wandering around and Mom and Dad are within eyesight and know where they are (or they don't) but a few minutes later I hear a name yelled out and the kid goes running. Seeing that all the time doesn't make me react to a kid wandering around a store, even if they SEEM to be alone at the instant I see them. Now, if they're sitting in the middle of the floor crying ... that's another situation. Then again, I saw that in the grocery store and the grandparents were standing at the other end of the aisle (I found out seconds later) waiting on the kid to stop throwing a fit. Situation isn't always clear-cut.
