Most of my recipes come out of a book entitled, "The Bartender's Black Book 7th Edition." My dad has a previous edition and we'll try fixing up different drinks and compare notes on what tastes good and what doesn't. Just as a reference we've been using a 1 - 5 scale, 1 = dump it out, 5 = delicious.
Here's a few of my favorites and their scores:
Cool Aid: 4.5
Fill glass with ice
3/4 oz Vodka
3/4 oz Melon Liqueur
3/4 oz Amaretto
2.5 oz Cranberry Juice
Shake
Notes: The recipe says you can substitute Peach Schnaps for the Melon Liqueur but when I tried this I thought the drink was too sweet. I think this is a good drink for a picnic or taking to a cook-out, it's something you can make up in bulk ahead of time and then serve when needed.
Grasshopper: 4
1 oz White Creme de Cacao
1 oz Green Creme de Menthe
Fill with heavy cream (1.5 - 2.5 oz)
Shake
Server or strain into chilled glass
Notes: This is one of my favorite before dinner drinks. It's sweet and while it's a little bit filling it doesn't leave you feeling full when you're done. I usually serve this in a martini glass because of the nice light green color.
Melon Thumper: 3.5
Fill glass with ice
1.5 oz Vodka
0.5 oz Melon Liqueur
Dash Lime Juice
Fill with Sour Mix
Shake
Silver Spider: 5
1/2 oz Vodka
1/2 oz Light Rum
1/2 oz Triple Sec
1/2 oz White Creme de Menthe
Shake
Strain into a chilled martini glass.
Notes: It's a strong drink, probably not a good one to start the evening with but I've found that it's a good second drink served after a Grasshopper. Honestly, the combination of liquors should taste offensive but the drink is very good.
I don't really want to turn this into a debate over what's a good drink and what's gross, I just wanted to share a few drinks that I like and hopefully hear about a few that other people enjoy. As a side note, if anyone has a reccomendation on a good substitute for Midori Melon Liqueur I'm all ears.
