This story really tears at me.
I am a former Marine. Anything that brings dishonor to the uniform makes me angry. A Marine who behaves dishonorably sullies not only himself but everyone who wore the Eagle, Globe and Anchor.
I am an animal lover. I have 3 dogs, all rescues, 5 cats, also all rescues. Mistreatment of animals makes me sick.
However, I don't think we're being fair with regard to this story. And by we I mean America in general. There has been a huge outcry about this story and the outcry is gaining in volume. I think it's unfair to the Marine in question.
How can we ask our young men and women to go to war, to kill fellow humans without a moment's hesitation, and still expect them to cherish a puppy's life? I want - I demand - our Marines do everything in their power to protect innocent lives. But are we asking too much of our service men and women to expect them to rise above cruelty like this? They're expected to kill people; can we really turn around and say "Kill people, let the puppies live"?
What this guy did was wrong, it was sickening. In context however I submit it's understandable, even expected. I'd like to see this guy get an article 15 for being a dumb ass. I fear he's going to get much worse and I don't think that's fair to him.
