Free agency starts at midnight tonight and as you can see from the salary cap numbers, there's a lot of teams with an ass-ton of money to spend. That means ridiculous contracts for all.

-Jets and Cardinals will both be making a huge push for Al Faneca.
-Asante Samuel is supposedly going to the Saints for big money.
-Randy Moss is a FA.
-Larry Fitzgerald and Chad Johnson are supposedly on the trading block.

Good times.

And the first laughable contract goes to the Oakland Raiders. Tommy Kelly, 7/50.5m, a little over $18 million in guarantees.

Kelly is a nice player I guess, but a DT with 13 career sacks and torn ACL is probably not the guy who should receive the biggest contract ever for his position. I'm just sayin'.

Haynesworth should be thrilled with this one.

I'm curious to see what the Dolphins do, having the most headroom to the salary cap of any other team...After Parcells' maneuvering, they have a lot of spots to fill and a FA field that doesn't have a lot of depth to it.

I can only hope for a bidding war for Jonathan Vilma. He's a very good speed LB but he doesn't fit into our 3-4 at all and really needs to play MLB somewhere else.

Reports are that the Lions were dangling Shaun Rogers and the Panthers Kris Jenkins in packages but I'd welcome a good draft pick if those don't pan out. Clayton on ESPN said he'd move pretty quickly so we'll see.

I'd like to see Pennington moved as well to someone like the Vikings since the top FA QB is Rex Grossman.

The Eagles cut Kearse as expected.

There's been a lot of talk on the Eagles boards about Asante Samuel, but I just don't see it unless his price drops a lot from what I've seen projected. The Eagles have two good cornerbacks with reasonable contracts. Maybe Lito Sheppard does get hurt a lot, but he is still a good corner.

I also see a lot of people talking about a Larry Fitzgerald trade, but I doubt that too. It seems too good to be possible.

The more realistic free agents I've seen discussed are Antwan Odom, DE from the Titans and Gibril Wilson, safety from the Giants. Two moves like that would make me very happy.

An Eagles website is reporting that Asante Samuel is a done deal. I'll wait for verification, but early speculation is that it means Lito Sheppard is gone, possibly in a trade to Arizona for Fitzgerald.

Again, that combo sounds too good to be true. I'd also be kind of bummed because I like Sheppard and it would mean we have no more Gators.

Wow, another awesome move by the Raiders...

We did need to keep our best run stopper, but not at that price. I can think of a lot of needs we have and that's too much money to throw at a non-elite defensive lineman.

Jets gets Pro Bowl DT Kris Jenkins from the Panthers for a 3rd and a 5th round pick. Also, NFL radio reports that Faneca is close to a 4/30 contract with the Jets.

Both proven commodities and positions of need. I like it.

well the broncos have a lot of needs.. curious as to what they will try to do in free agency:

2nd WR -- javon walker will be gone, they won't pay him the roster bonus
OL -- need one to replace lepsis
DT -- need one to actually stop people and get pressure [maybe the guys we drafted the last two years will do something]
DE -- could probably use one depending on how the other guys pan out
MLB -- need one to move williams back to the outside
S -- need someone to replace lynch

I live here in North Carolina so I'm very familiar with Kris Jenkins. He's always hurt and he always shows up very overweight every year.

He had a decent year last season, but he's a shadow of his former beastly self. I doubt he'll last the whole season for the Jets.

Faneca will work out nice for you guys. The cards wanted him but due to fitzgerald's salary they couldn't pay him the 8 mil/year

Injury risks are a concern but he hasn't missed a game since 2005, and I don't think nose tackles can really be overweight. Fat boys are needed to plug the middle.

Asante Samuel to the Eagles is now official. He was introduced as the Eagle's new starting left cornerback which was Sheppard's position.

The Eagles refuse to talk about it, but the writing is on the wall here: Sheppard is being used in a trade. First of all, if the Eagles were going to demote a cornerback to make room for Samuel, they obvious choice would be Sheldon Brown who is not as good as Sheppard. Secondly, it's pretty easy to argue that Sheppard is every bit as good as Samuel.

So why does a team pick up a 10 mil a year cornerback to replace a pro bowl cornerback who is signed for another 2-3 years at a very reasonable cap figure of around 3.5 a year? The only realistic answer is that Lito Sheppard's ability and salary make him an excellent bargaining chip to deal to a team with a superstar they can't afford that also needs cap room. Arizona and Fitzgerald sure seem to fit that bill.

Secondly, it's pretty easy to argue that Sheppard is every bit as good as Samuel.

Eh, two different types of corners. Samuel is really only decent in coverage but he's a god of a ballhawk.

Good contract considering what his demands were rumored to be.

The Pats have rarely shown any inclination to step up to re-sign anyone for giant bucks. So, Samuel isn't a surprise, and neither would Moss be if he decides to bail for $$$$$.

I worry that this is eventually going to bite them on their shiny metal asses, but so far it's worked pretty well.

As expected, the Dolphins are diving head first into the deep end of the FA pool...

ex-Bronco reciever David Kircus, who didn't make it onto the roster last year...Interesting that they'd sign him, after a season without any play time and only 28 games total...I wouldn't expect much out of him..and expect the fins to pick up a better reciever later either in the FA pool or in the Draft....

ex-49'er Justin Smiley at Guard. The dolphins O-line needs 2 or three starters if i'm not mistaken, plus with Zach Thomas to Dallas, they're probably looking for some anchor/team-builder to keep things together.

ex-Raider Josh McCown as QB. Its no secret that Miami has been looking for a franchise player since Marino retired...and had zero success there. Still, McCown only started 9 games for Oakland, but his numbers looked good. Smart money's on McCown being Miami's starter, with rookie Matt Ryan peppered in there (sources are suggesting that Miami will pick him up in their first round pick)

ex-Jaguar Ernest Wilford at reciever. 45 rec. Avg'd 11.5 yards per reception last year with 3 TD's...not a bad pickup.

ex-Tital Def. Tackle Randy Starks. he's young, only 24, and didn't have a great season last season, but has some solid seasons behind him.

ex-Cowboy Jason Ferguson. A Bill Parcells buddy, no surprise there.

Still awaiting word on TE Sean Ryan and AZ Linebacker Calvin Place.

Raiders sign Gibril Wilson from the Giants. Good signing in my opinion, though I don't know what it means for Michael Huff, the guy we took over Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler.

Yeah...after signing McCown, it strikes me as an odd choice, however, i can also see Parcells being a guy with some foresight to start grooming a decent long-term QB also...Aside from Ryan, based on their FA picks so far, the other 1st round choices go to one of a handful of linemen as the next logical choices...

The Packers have released Bubba Franks and traded Corey Williams (DT) to Cleveland. Not a bad pickup for them, and we get a second round pick. We have 3 selections in the first 60 picks, not too shabby.

I'm torn on the Franks release. While he should have turned out to be more productive, he was an emotional fan favorite and very good for the locker room environment. Hopefully, if nobody picks him up, we can resign him later in the year, but I think he'll be picked up soon.
