since the local library didn't have any of the conan books ... anyone have good recommendations for star wars books?
I picked up "Heir to the Empire' by Zahn [it sounded decent] but wasn't sure if there were good / bad ones out there and which ones were best. |

The Heir to the Empire trilogy is the best. If you enjoy the more actiony sci-fi aspects (as opposed to the mystical stuff) the X-Wing books and the Black
Fleet Crisis trilogy were all entertaining.

Shadows of the Empire is probably the most important one to read.
Darth Maul is a good one too, offering back story to Darth Maul and his own little adventure. Pretty cool since Episode I was supposed to have him be some badass character but barely used him. I liked the Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy (The Mandolorian Armor, Slave Ship, Hard Merchandise). Basically a pretty cool story revolving around Boba Fett. I really liked this trilogy, but I remember a lot of people who post here said they hated it and one guy even said it was "unreadable". I don't even like to read and I enjoyed it though, so I guess it's up to you if you want to check it out. |

I'd second the Zahn books. Probably the best Star Wars novels I've read. He's got a 2 book follow up to the Heir series called The
Hand of Thrawn which is Specter of the Past and Vision of the Future.
The main problem with the Star Wars books is that there are so many different authors that it's a bit of a crap shoot. Here's a list of them from Wikipedia to help you out (the list also includes a timeline so you can see where any book falls within the overall storyline). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_books I've not read them all, but of the ones I have, I'd recommend Shadows of the Empire, The Jedi Academy Trilogy, I Jedi, The Black Fleet Crisis Trilogy, The New Rebellion, and The Corellian Trilogy. I also read the first few in the New Jedi Order series, specifically Vector Prime and the two Dark Tide books, and those were decent too. But I kind of got bored with the Star Wars stuff from there and stopped reading them. By the time I got interested in it again, there'd been so many books pumped out that I didn't feel like trying to play catch up. Overall though, if you are a Star Wars geek like I am, you should enjoy those. |

I've read all but the last book for the "The New Jedi Order" series. Then I'll wrap it up with Dark Nest. Over all the series is ok. Too many
different authors makes some books kinda crappy. Gives a different aspect and view on the Force which some people don't like, but I thought it was done
well. You don't have to have the back history from all the books before, and can jump right in on the series with out feeling lost.
The other suggestions above are also good. Zahn's books were great. X-wing series is also kick ass. Also for your library... see if they have the ability to order books from partner libraries. Almost all the books I want to read are not at my local library. But by placing a hold on it they ship it to the library and call me when it comes in. |

I too recommend the Zahn books. I also enjoyed The Courtship of Princess Leia, and the Rogue Squadron novels.
