My driver's license expires next week and New Jersey has a fairly ridiculous 6 point system of identification that you need to provide before you can renew. My current New Jersey license only counts as 1 point, for example. Social Security card and proof of residence are also 1 point each. So in addition to those, I need to provide an official copy of my birth certificate (which I don't have, nor does my mother for some reason) or a current passport (mine is expired) by next Friday or the 1 point I get from my current license no longer counts. a&*OV%#YL.

Anyways, short of driving to Connecticut and and knocking on the doors of Vital Records offices, is there any way that I can obtain this online with something like photocopy ID provided, by early next week? The couple of searches I've done have turned up geneology websites and a couple shady fly by night operations.

Anyone have any ideas?

I've had to do this for myself and my husband in recent years. MA was very easy and I simply completed an online form and within a week a copy was delivered to us. NY was also easy but I believe the wait time was slightly longer.

If there is something I can do to help you (I am in CT) let me know. If it doesn't involve driving to New London or Fairfield county I might be able to swing it. I live outside of Hartford.

Everyone still hates me

I had to go out of the country a few years back and needed my passport quickly. I did not have a birth certificate (my mom died and my dad is an idiot). I called the SanDiego county vital records people and they actually overnighted me an original so I could get my passport.

They were very cool about the whole thing...

Thanks, Talula. That's what it's looking like to me too. The one legit looking service I found, VitalChek.com, didn't have the New Haven records offices as one of their affiliated agencies.

If I lived in Utah, I might be pissed. (For reasons other than living in Utah)

I think all this silliness is a result of new Homeland Security regulations

I'm also impressed with how most of the links at the NJ DMV page about ID requirements go to non-existent destinations or try to get you to buy insurance from GEICO or some other insurance company.

It's all post-9/11 bullshit. My non-digital license is 1 point and an FAA pilot's license is only 2 points. Those two together with a Social Security card and proof of address is not enough to renew a freaking Driver's License.

Not that I have an FAA license anyways, but if I did, I'd be even more pissed. I hope the NJ DMV burns.

My son is 4. They sent his passport application back. They want other picture ID besides a SS# and a birth certificate to give him a passport. I'm on the phone complaining and the affirmative action postergirl, who speaks a language that's like English only different, gives me a list of other ID he can provide which includes: utility bills, bank statements, marriage license, professional certifications, etc. "What part of he's four don't you understand you stupid piece of shit?"

Turns out we were missing an additional form. Go figure.

Vitalchek is very fast and painless, but if they can't get it for you you should still be able to get the certificate through the mail by contacting the records office directly.

why is this 9/11 related? as much as i can bitch about the state of illinois, we don't present 6 flaming hoops for residents to jump through to renew their licenses. we just smile, update the license, and charge them a fee.

It's 9/11 related because the requirements were tightened specifically because of 9/11. And Illinois is obviously not New Jersey, or near it for that matter.

Canadian Government has an online application. All I had to do was provide some pretty easy info (Date of birth, Mother, Father, Place of birth, and my Driver's License number made things speedy)

Not sure if the US has this or if it is much different for each state. Something to look into though.

Yeah, well you have to provide all that information as well. Doing so from another state is a pain in the ass though.

Anyways, I found out that Connecticut also sucks and I won't be able to get the Certificate the same day even if I showed up in person. Looks like I'll be driving illegally for at least a little while.

Time to bitch out Mom for not even having a copy.
