I've heard good things from folks on the board about Netflix, but I was also curious about Blockbuster online. I think I'm ready to get with the in-crowd and switch to online.

Netflix or Blockbuster? |

Has anyone here tried both of these online services? If so, what would your preference be? I've been doing the in-store Blockbuster movie pass, but they keep raising the monthy fee and most of the new movies are never in by the time I get over there to rent them.

With a grain of salt...i use netflix but just wanted to issue a word of caution: If you are big into getting the movie the day it is released my experience with netflix has been lackluster. Since I don't really care that much i just let them send it whenever they can, it's been more then great for me. Other's may have better experience with new released but other then that I love netflix. I can't imagine blockbuster can be that much better/worse in regards to how they handle things.

I use Blockbuster and prefer it over NetFlix. Not only is the price comparable, but you also receive 2 coupons for in-store rentals each month.
The distribution center for my area is an hour away so I receive the movies very quick. Also, if you sign up for Blockbuster or Netflix via the "Accept Offer" on the main page of this message board, EZBoard will make a deposit directly into our community chest to help maintain our gold status. |

Netflix because they have a greater selection of harder to find titles that I want (20s-30s/foreign/cult) as well as most unrated/director's cut/nc-17 versions of films.
The distribution center is relatively close by so when they aren't intentionally delaying my movies because I've sent too many back in a given month, then I'll usually get them in a 2 day turnaround. Plus I haven't been in a Blockbuster in like 5-6 years. Seems like too much of a pain in the ass to keep having to go back to the store. If you only stick to new releases, It probably doesn't matter much which one you choose. |

Netflix at our house. Never had a problem getting a new release in a timely manner, either.
Huge selection of the older/indy/cult films like Fed said. Besides, why do I want two free 'in store' coupons for Blockbuster? If I'm using a service like Netflix, it is probably because I fucking HATE going to the video store to stand behind the morons getting 15 video games and the lady with six screaming children asking about every single new release and if they are in. We use Blockbuster but have problems lately. We tend to reserve movies months in advance if possible, yet we never get them in a timely fashion, unless they are not really popular films. We've tried sending them complaints about it, all we get are stock answers which don't even address the problem. The worst thing about this is they don't even ship movies further down the queue. This happened when we wanted to get Crash. We reserved it months in advance, after 2 weeks it still had not been shipped, but nothing else came either which basically means we were paying for a service and we weren't tying it up - they were. We ended up using the free monthly coupons to get it at the local Blockbuster.
Initially Netflix was good about this when we had it - if you reserved in advance far enough ahead odds are you got the movie you wanted within a few days of release, but eventually we stopped using them as it took quite a while to get things shipped. My guess is it had to do with the sudden surge of success and difficulty keeping up with demand, not sure how it is now. Despite the fact Blockbuster *is* ass, Netflix may or may not be better depending on how close you are to a distribution center, and if nothing else you can always use the coupons to make up for Blockbusters' screw ups. |

The in-store coupons are great on Release day of DVDs. I believe Blockbuster guarantees it will be in stock (B&M). And the coupons are always great for those, "Hey I always wanted to see that" evenings when you already have your 3 rentals sitting on your nightstand. ![]() GO GATORS! |

Blockbuster Online has stunk for me over this trial month. The turn around time on discs in East TN is terrible. The shipping time is estimated 1 day longer than netflix, but all discs came 1 day later than estimated. So instead of a 2 day ship at Netflix it's taking Blockbuster 4.
On top of that I've gotten 2 discs out of order already. One of which was a TV series disc. I got discs 2 and 3 of the season before 1 shipped even though all were available. I never had a problem with Netflix doing this. One other thing. I tired repeatedly to cancle my Blockbuster account online and their damn site was fubar. It kept coming back with an error. By the time I had a chance to call to cancel, the damn offices were closed. This was just another in a string of bad experiences in only 1 months use. So, where I live Blockbuster Online stinks badly comapred to Netflix. Axiss Glox Level 70 Stone Fist |

Thanks for the insight. I'll probably try Blockbuster, primarily for the in-store coupons. That'll be nice for some game rentals. I can always try out Netflix if it doesn't appeal to me. Thanks guys.

Netflix shafts its frequent renters.
www.cnn.com/2006/US/02/10...index.html I'm really getting annoyed with their service lately. I may switch. |

If you seriously think either of their competitors will be different, I think you are overestimating their business ethics

btw, I went with Blockbuster. So far I've been very pleased with it. I've been receiving movies within 2 days with no interuptions and no problems with them moving down my queue. Happy so far.

I've given up on the mainstream movie rental places. Netflix was slower but cheap, blockbuster was great until they limited their plans and raised the
price, hollywood is tanking, plus with their rental plan i couldn't get anything that had been released in the last 5 or 6 weeks. I found a mom & pop
store locally that has a smaller selection, but has staff that is friendly and knowledgeable (not some hung over dipshit who only knows how to scan the
barcode) and will special order titles from a "companion store" if they don't have it. DVD's are 5 day rentals and cost 2 bucks a
piece....goodbye chain rental places for me....

Up until a few years ago, I preferred our local mom & pop store for the very same reasons. Sadly, they went out of business otherwise I'd probably
still be renting through them.

Six months ago, we had three Mom&Pop video stores in town: no chains!
Today one has closed (the owner, who was a great guy and a super movie buff, died of cancer), the second is closing (because the building owner wants a long-term lease and the shop owner doesn't think the video rental business will exist in five years) and the third is downsizing its space by 50%. I think video rental stores will soon be as common as buggy-whip manufacturers. ![]() Harmony of Souls : My Quiver All this science I don't understand; it's just my job five days a week. |

Yea, one of our grocery stores has one of those vending machines. Never tried it though. My husband and I use Netflix and have for several years now. We have never had a problem and now with the unlimited online movie screenings, it is even better- given that his monitor is like watching movies on a nice big screen. I also like Netflix because we do rent the really bizarro movies as well as the new releases. If I was not in a hurry to see them in the theater, I don't need them rushed to my house. All is well in the world either way.
