That's the season's theme, apparently. After another dismal summer (what else are you going to have with Kupcake running the show?), the main question isn't when Kobe
Bryant leaves, it's will he last the season?
The 'big' roster moves over the summer turned out to be the return of Derek Fisher (who couldn't guard me, and I suck) and Chris Mihm (out last season with a severe ankle
injury). Javaris Crittendon, selected in the first round, appears to be a player, but he's a rookie, and rookies don't get PT from Phil Jackson. If Fisher goes down with any kind of injury, that's going to have to change.
Injurywise, Bryant is dealing with tendinitis, Lamar Odom is out as a result of offseason shoulder surgery (won't be back until opening night, if then). There's been a couple of minor injuries, nothing really serious at this point.
What has to happen this season?
1. Somebody HAS to decide they want to play basketball. There's no standing around watching Bryant, especially if he's not going to be there later in the season, or next year. The Lakers start with a bad stretch, so this has to happen *now*.
2. The entire team needs to realize their defense sucks. 111 and 119 to Golden State (who has a good team)? 106 to Seattle? No. Tighten the damn defense. Actually, start by deciding you want to play some.
3. The 'shooters' (and I've been saying this since Glen Rice's day) need to make shots. Radmanovic will be run out of town with another year anywhere CLOSE to what he put up last year (and he should have been ran out last year, frankly). Your job is to spread the defense. Do your job and make a shot.
4. Bynum. This is the year. You want to prove Jim Buss right, play like it.
5. The front office has to stop being incompetent and realize this team needs parts (yeah, I'm dreaming here). After failing to get Garnett (who didn't want to come because, in part, of the front office incompetence), and standing around looking like idiots while Indiana dangles Jermaine O'Neal, it's time to realize the obvious: the front office isn't doing the damn job. I said before if they didn't bring Jerry West back in some capacity after his Grizzlies contract was up, they'd have fucked up big time. Well, they fucked up. BIG TIME.
Assuming Bryant is traded, there are very few (if any) Laker fans that believe Kupcake would not get screwed. And if he couldn't get screwed on his own, believe Jim Buss would help. People get on Kobe's case for saying (in part) the front office is incompetent. Newsflash, people, Laker fans have been saying that for years. Right after West left.
As far as record, it's near impossible to tell. If Bryant goes down for any length of time, this team is done. The rest of the players aren't good enough to do anything in the west.
Assuming Bryant stays, and the team stays healthy: 40-45 wins, 1st round playoff loss.
Assuming Bryant is traded or goes down to injury: lottery team.
