I don't think the Armenian genocide resolution was some nefarious idea intended to create the cascade of political fallout that it has. It's more
likely that some number of congressmen have a sizable Armenian-American constituency that was applying political pressure, said congressmen thought it sounded
like a relatively risk-free resolution, and ran with it.
Congress has reportedly been backsliding on this resolution ever since the fallout became better understood. The evils you [Borofin] mention are all boogey-men out of the 80s. Today's problems (Islamic radicalism, global climate change, immigration, etc.) have nothing to do with some sort of "grand design" by any of the monsters under your bed. |

I agree with you, Gandol; it wasn't intentionally damaging our friendship with Turkey.

I don't know though. I can see some minor/junior/newbie House or maybe even Senate member not knowing the whole deal. But the fucking Speaker and/or the senate's majority leader? If Pelosi and Reid are that clueless about how one of our relatively close allies in the area would respond to something like that, with as long as they've been in DC, that's about as pathetic as if they were doing it intentionally. If they did it unintentionally, good lord, that makes me question their intelligence. |

I don't get why we even care. This happened over 80 years ago; who's even alive in Turkey that was responsible for the crimes? Ya it sucked but why do
something about it 80 years later when you can't punish the people who did it? We have to come down on their children and grandchild for what, to feel

A couple folks brought this up. I think it's a fair question. Personally I don't care, until Turkey had a hissy fit about it. It does matter to a lot of people; specifically the Armenians. I'll join others in speculating that the genesis of this resolution was a congressional district with a heavy Armenian population. My guess (I can only guess as I am not Armenian) is that they want historical recognition of the genocide. I think that's a reasonable request and one that doesn't loose validity in 80 years. Probably not in a few hundred years. A genocide is not something that a group recovers from quickly. It's a not "walk it off and quite whining" situation. Now why do we care? I started to care as soon as Turkey started having a fit. I care because they want us to ignore the truth because of their threats. In my simple world that's wrong. Now I am all for the resolution because I don't want my government helping another government deny it's genocide. It's a pretty clear cut issue in my view.
