So of those here who own one, which one in a series of XBOXes are you on?

I'm on my 2nd one. My first came up with a red light error and needed to be sent back. I've had the new one for like 10 months without any problems.

I'm still on my first one, and bought it at launch. I have friends (one of whom is a Microsoft employee) that have had to return theirs at least once. I
don't know what I'm doing different, other than that I have the fan stand that blows air up through the bottom of the unit... I can't imagine that
really has that dramatic of an effect on life of the unit.
It might almost be worth it if mine dies later this year if they do release the rumored HDMI/IPTV model later this year. There were rumors, then Microsoft said it was just a demo model, now the rumors are swirling again that it will be released late this year. Would suck to shell out for a whole new unit, but adding HDMI and the 120GB HDD would be compelling features. |

I'm on my first, which I bought about two or three months ago. No problems yet.
Have read a lot about the red circle of death that Fed mentioned and various other issues. Hopefully I'll be issue free. I have had pretty good luck with consoles in general. I still have my PS2 from release day and it works perfectly. My PSX lasted forever until I finally gave it away. 3DO, Saturn, etc all still working(or they did the last time I hooked them up :))
I'm not givin' you attitude. I just want another drink.

I'm on my 2nd, so far so good on this one for about the last 6-7 weeks. The first one I got a couple months ago had an error with the dvd drive, 4 times
outta 5 it would tell me xbox 360 games weren't xbox 360 games.

My roommate had his go south at about the 9 month mark. Unfortunately, he hadn't bought the extended warranty, so it only had the 90 day base warranty. Fortunately, MS did the right thing and just extended the base warranty to 1 year...my roommate just made it under the deadline, so his (new or rebuilt) 360 should be arriving tomorrow.

I can imagine that would have a pretty substantial effect on the life of the unit. The irony is that the fan is powered by a USB connection into the back of the XBox... so it's drawing power from the XBox which is undoubtedly creating more heat inside the case. It's not a massive fan or anything, which is why I find it hard to believe that it's the major factor in my luck so far. I have had a few lockups after playing for long periods that are probably heat-related, though. |

My old roommate got his a few months after launch and it's still running. After seeing how hot that thing runs and how loud it is I'm not surprised a
lot of them die. The new 65nm CPU releasing in a few months should help heat related issues a ton. Hopefully quiet the thing down too.
I want a 360, but I've decided to wait for the 65nm and hopefully HDMI capable release mid year at least.

I've read a few things about those fan units actually fucking the Xbox up and have seen a bunch of pictures where it melted the USB port on the Xbox and
fan-unit. Doh.

I've had mine for roughly a year now. No issues. About 2 months ago a friend pulled it apart and replaced the fans and redid the 2 heatsinks with artic
silver. Pulling a 360 apart w/o snapping the case is truely a bitch however it is nice and silent now.

Haven't had any problems with mine so far. Mind you, only had it a few months. Although, I must say that I don't find mine particularly loud or warm. Maybe because I only bought it recently they fixed some of the production problems with earlier versions but mine seems to be running great. |

Actually, I had a freeze up or two, but only playing demos I downloaded, not full games. I just attributed it to pre-release code. Even on marathon gaming
sessions I've never seen a lockup. Forget how long I was playing Lost Planet yesterday and didn't lockup once.

Just snagged the Niko Intercooler, attaches via the power port (provides a pass through with voltage taps) and plastic two clips nearer towards the video
connector. Those three little pancake fans sure to make a difference to reduce the amount of heat radiating off the cover. Fairly decent design and molding -
they did an elegant job making sure it met with the styling and connects up nicely; all this for a decent price point no less. The cashier mentioned to be on
the look out for the Red Ring of Death - if it does occur, to power down and re-seat the power connector as that ought to solve that particular symptom.

I finally got the dreaded triple lights today. I'm going to see if I can talk them into upgrading me to a black one when I call tech support. I doubt it,
but it'll be worth a shot.

I sent my first one it right around the beginning of 2007 for repairs. A coworker just got his third unit (second repair/replacement) back in the mail last
week.

Still on the 2nd without issues. My friend just got his 2nd red light this week and he's pretty sure its out of warranty so $100 or so to replace it.

considering how common it is, i'm amazed there hasn't been a class action lawsuit.

Because, statistically, its nowhere near as common as you find when a bunch of people talk about it on a thread.
That, and microsoft has been extremely helpful and generous in their warranty support. |

Compared to other consoles it's insanely higher. I frequent some forums where the main topic is gaming and a huge portion of 360 owners have had defective
units. This forum is pretty tiny(relatively) and already on this thread there are 6 people who have had one break or know a friend who did. I would say there
is a problem and MS is helpful and generous because they are selling so many units that are breaking. It's in their best interst to be generous and
helpful. MS will never release official numbers, but I think there is probably merit for a class action suit. Who the hell wants to go up against MS's
lawyers though anyway. Particularly if the company is at least trying to replace everyone's units.

They don't replace units for free. It's $140, and considering how long the system has been out, this many systems, even ones that were bought at
release day and are out of warranty, shouldn't be dying.

I'm on System #3... and from the way my systm is sounding laty. It might become #4. My first I got 3 weeks after launch. It died 6 months later. system #2
only lasted 3 months.. well It was party my fault..(had the system on carpet and cause the video card to cook itself) but I still was able to get it replaced.
Now System #3 has been going strong.. but its starting to act up.. I'm really not to worried since I still can get it replaced for free if it dies out here
in the next few months or less but still sucks.... I have played the hell out of my 360 so thats most liky why I have more problems then most.. but also the
first 2 where consider Launch system...

I've no doubt its higher than "normal" ... but what the number is I don't know. None of us do. Anecdotal evidence is horrible, period, end of
story. Its useless in making anything more than a very, very vague estimation of "normal" or "not normal". So, we know its probably not
normal ... big deal. That doesn't mean its risen to the point of being worthy of a class action lawsuit especially given how generous they've been with
extending warranties, free shipping, and so forth.
