Frankly, I think this is the year they have to win it all. Marion will have a career year to push his market value before he goes on the market. Nash isn't getting any younger. Hill was a great addition.

Shaq for Marion deal close

You can easily see the reasoning behind this trade, you just have to wonder if it's too late in the game. The Suns have struggled this season, far more than any season in the past, with the low post game. Shaq obviously provides an instant answer to two different problems. 1) He can defend the low post better than Shawn. 2) He can "run" the offense, well an offense, while Nash is not in the game. In fact, this could actually force teams to have to really prepare in unique ways for the Suns. Nash/Hill/Bell/Diaw/Stoudemire will run you down; then bring in Shaq/Barbosa and you have a combination not so different from what D-Wade and Shaq have been doing in Miami.

Of course this is assuming that Shaq is healthy.

Shaq now has time to get healthy though, something he didn't have in Miami. Let's not forget that the Suns have the best record in the West.

Shawn Marion wanted out. The Suns didn't really have much of a chance against "the bigs" in the west without some sort of major deal. The only reason I like this move is because it addresses a couple of different concerns, and I think gives us a better shot at a title this year. I'm not convinced that it's going to make us the best team in the league, because there are just so many good teams; but I think this ultimately will make us better for playoff basketball.

Shaq is a lazy, old, and an injured player at this point in his career. He has typically done well in the playoffs, which seems to be the only time he has put forth any effort in recent years, but there's no guarantee he can be healthy enough to be a factor by that time.

He may help or hurt the Suns, but I wouldn't want him on a team I liked. If the Pistons gave anything to get a guy like Shaq I would be enraged.

Marion has a $17m player option for next year that he's not likely to exercise.

I can obviously see the logic in trading him for a big man but if Shaq and his overpriced 15 minutes per game for the next 2.5 years is the best Steve Kerr can get, he's in trouble.

Marion wants two things: a bigger role on the team (i.e. more credit for what he brings), and a max extension. Phoenix was willing to give him neither, so he wanted out.

Thing is... he wouldn't have opted out this season, because no one in the NBA would have offered him more than $17M a year. Honestly, even if he waits til 2010, when a lot more teams are going to have cap space, there really won't be that many people looking to pay him the max, if anyone at all. This reminds me a lot of Latrell Spreewell, but to a greater degree.

Now, what's REALLY confusing, is Phoenix's desire to cut salary and stay under the luxury tax. I mean, they traded their best post defender, and TWO first round picks for ONE second round pick from Seattle. Absolutely awful trade personnel-wise. They just wanted to save money for Sarver. Now they're taking on a $20M/year contract in Shaq, which runs for three more years? Just doesn't make sense.

First, I thought this trade was a joke. Then I just thought that it was some crazy rumor that Riles threw out to get more suitors for Shaq. Now that it's on the verge of being complete, I'm at a loss for words. Not only did the Suns make a panicked move after seeing the Lakers get even bigger, but they traded for the player least fit for their system. Is Shaq going to be able to run with them? Nope. Is Shaq going to help space the floor for Nash to penetrate and kick out to the shooters? Nice try - he's not leaving the lane. Is Shaq going to do well on the pick and roll, which both the Lakers and Spurs are going to run on the Suns relentlessly? HAHAHA. He couldn't (wouldn't?) even do that in his prime!

As for his post defense... I guess you missed the part where Shaq was on the verge of setting the record for most consecutive foul outs this year. The only reason that he didn't get the record was because Riles decides to sit him down with NINE MINUTES LEFT against the Cavs. I remember watching the game, and it would pure comedy.

I'm curious as to how Shaq is going to fit in the Sun's system too.

I could see them bringing him in at the end of his career to come in off the bench and give not only Stoudemire a rest, but the rest of the team as well by slowing the tempo for a bit. But at this price tag they have to see him as a starter or big contributor, no? I don't get how he doesn't change everything they do when he comes in the game.
