Memory questions

I'm in the process of putting together my new PC and my google-fu is letting me down (or maybe there's just not a definitive answer!)

Am I better off pushing memory speed higher at the cost of timings, or lowering the speed to get decent timings?

Specifically, I've got a Q6600 on a 333 FSB; my memory will happily stabilise at 1066 if I slack off the timings to something like 5-5-5-18 but if I drop it down to 800 or so, I should be able to push that down below...

Going to be building a new pc soon and was looking for advice. Some guys here seem to really know their stuff so....Too bad Silound is no longer around as he helped me a ton a few years ago (and even built the damn thing)

Anywho....my questions.

Is it worth upgrade(some say downgrade) to Vista at this point. I'd like to have 4gigs of ram but I understand you need Vista to do this? Will 2 gigs be plenty enough for a few years? I like my computers to last at least...

iTunes WTF?

Downloaded the new update for iTunes, opened it and it says i've got no music library and asks if i'd like to create one. Any idea what it means? it wont let me into iTunes without creating one and if i create one i've got none of my music appearing. I don't really want to have to re-import all my music...any ideas?

DvD Scrapbook

I want to make a scrapbook on DVD, anyone know of any software I can use for that? All I can find are companies that would love to take my money to do it for me. I can also find lots of places that show me how to make my scrapbook on my computer so I can print it out, but that's also not what I want. I want to make a scrapbook that I can burn to DvD and have each page fade to the next. I know there is software out there, I've used it before but I can't for the life of me remember...

keyboard error

OK, guys, help me out if you have any ideas.

Computer locks up. On reboot, doesn't recognize the keyboard. Boots to windows because BIOS is set to bypass errors. Mouse doesn't work either. Keyboard doesn't get power, mouse does. Both are USB. Switch both to different USB ports, no change. Switch both out with known working mouse and keyboard, no change. I'd bet on the ports being bad, except the mouse gets power. I'm guessing that something prevents...

Hmmm.

So now that I've gotten used to the weird and wonderful ways Vista does certain things the only thing that causes my ears to steam is that fucking hell spawned User Account Control. I'm so tempted to turn it off but I know I probably shouldn't. Anyone else turn it off?

Keyboard/Mouse

Anyone have a recommendation on a decent cordless keyboard/mouse combination? Traditionally I'm not a fan of cordless keyboards since when the batteries die you're left high and dry ... but with the laptop now it negates that aspect. Looking at a decent combination but haven't looked at them in many years so don't know what is overpriced crap and what's good.

My husband decided I needed a new computer so he bought me a Dell XPS with all sorts of bells and whistles (quadcore processor, some uber graphics card, and a really nice new monitor). My old one was seven years old and while we had replaced parts and upgaded it, it was maxed out for decent game play and newer programs. (on a side note, I think he did this because he has something better in mind for himself and is thinking of how to spring this on me- first, bribe, then announce).

With summer coming up, i'm planning on doing a bit more hiking/fishing than i've done in previous years. I'd like to be able to keep tabs on where i am and whats around me. after doing some work on the side, i've got some spare cash lying around and was thinking this might be a good time to get a GPS unit.

Been getting the lame can't read disc screens on the 360. Haven't gotten the red rings so knock on wood. I'm sure it's a crappy disc reader so I was thinking I should just open it up and replace it myself instead of going through the hassle of sending it in for repairs.

I'm looking to pick up a 500GB external hard drive. I'm pretty sure the PC it will be connected to can do both firewire and USB, but definitely USB (pretty sure the mobo has firewire ports on the back, but as I've never owned any device that used firewire, they may not work, for all I know). I'll be moving my current desktop into a closet and using it as a media server running Vista Home Premium, and just docking my new ThinkPad tablet PC at my desk as my new primary...
