Am I better off pushing memory speed higher at the cost of timings, or lowering the speed to get decent timings?

Specifically, I&#39;ve got a Q6600 on a 333 FSB; my memory will happily stabilise at 1066 if I slack off the timings to something like 5-5-5-18 but if I drop
it down to 800 or so, I should be able to push that down below... ]]></description>

Computer locks up.  On reboot, doesn&#39;t recognize the keyboard.  Boots to windows because BIOS is set to bypass errors.  Mouse doesn&#39;t work either. 
Keyboard doesn&#39;t get power, mouse does.  Both are USB.  Switch both to different USB ports, no change.  Switch both out with known working mouse and
keyboard, no change.  I&#39;d bet on the ports being bad, except the mouse gets power.  I&#39;m guessing that something prevents... ]]></description>

My husband decided I needed a new computer so he bought me a Dell XPS with all sorts of bells and whistles (quadcore processor, some uber graphics card, and a
really nice new monitor).  My old one was seven years old and while we had replaced parts and upgaded it, it was maxed out for decent game play and newer
programs. (on a side note, I think he did this because he has something better in mind for himself and is thinking of how to spring this on me- first, bribe,
then announce).
